Charles Edward Chamberlayne Jr. was born in Richmond, VA and attended public schools throughout the city. He also attended St. Emma Military Academy, a Black Catholic military boarding high school in Powhatan, VA. Rev. Chuck attended Virginia State University on a R.O.T.C. scholarship and met his lovely wife, Rev. Sharon there.
After graduation, Rev. Chuck worked for Johnson & Johnson and then spent ten years with Sea Land Service, a containerized shipping company where he traveled internationally auditing and worked in accounting. Rev. Chuck then worked for the Caribbean based shipping company, Navieras de Puerto Rico, where he spent 14 years as Vice President and Controller. Upon the sale of Navieras, he served as the Controller for the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, headquartered in New York until event 911.
Rev. Chuck graduated cum laude from New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 2001 and began postgraduate studies at Union Theological Seminary in Columbia University, New York City. He is currently a D.Min. student at Drew University. Rev. Chuck was licensed and ordained by First Baptist of Lincoln Gardens under the tutelage of the Rev. Dr. Deforest “Buster” Soaries. Currently in addition to being the Interim Pastor here at Imani Baptist Church in East Orange, Rev. Chuck has taken the position of Comptroller for the Cathedral International in Perth Amboy but he is also formerly the Senior Pastor of The Reformed Church of North Brunswick where he served nine years as a minister under contract from another denomination. Rev. Chuck, among other things, also has taught Old Testament, Homiletics and Biblical Interpretation at Somerset Christian College now "Pillar College" as an Adjunct Professor in the Biblical Studies Department.
Rev. Chuck and Sharon, who also graduated from New Brunswick Theological Seminary was also ordained by First Baptist of Lincoln Gardens under the Rev. Dr. Deforest “Buster” Soaries and is a social worker at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for women. They have been married for thirty-eight years and have three sons, Charles III, a Howard University graduate, who works in public relations for the Mayor of San Diego, CA; Michael, a Morehouse College and Wharton Business School graduate, is an Investment Banker for the Royal Bank of Canada in New York and Brian, a Howard University and Cornell University Law School graduate, is a writer/ co-producer of an ABC sitcom in Los Angeles, CA.
